Our Story
Boltay Huroof began with a simple but urgent observation: in a country of over 8 million visually impaired people, there was almost no Urdu language material available in Braille. Textbooks, religious texts, official forms the everyday materials that sighted Pakistanis take for granted simply didn’t exist in a form the blind community could read independently.
Founded by H S Umer Farooq, Boltay Huroof set out to change that starting with software that could convert Urdu alphabets into Braille codes, and growing into a full ecosystem of Braille textbooks, accessible design, and assistive technology. What began as a project of Braille Translator software now grown into specialized Pakistan’s first inclusive Braille development company, recognized nationally and internationally for its work.
Why It Matters
- An estimated 8 million people in Pakistan are visually impaired.
- According to the British Council, roughly 90% of blind people in Pakistan cannot complete their education mainly due to the unavailability of Braille books.
- Existing Braille material is scarce and often too expensive for the average family to afford.
- Without accessible education, visually impaired individuals are frequently excluded from economic opportunity and treated as dependents rather than contributors.
- We believe this is solvable and we’re building the tools to solve it.

- Built for Urdu much of the world’s Braille technology is built around English and other major languages. We’ve focused specifically on Urdu, a language largely overlooked in accessible tech.

The Founder
Umer founded Boltay Huroof after witnessing firsthand the barriers Pakistan’s visually impaired community faces in accessing basic education. Under his leadership, Boltay Huroof has grown from a single software prototype into a nationally recognized social enterprise.
